The call for contributions for the 2027 EUSEA conference is now open. This year, we’re embracing the spirit of our Glaswegian hosts by adding a Scottish word to the conference name:
Gallus Glasgow: Public Engagement for the Brave and the Bold
Gallus is Scots for someone daring, cheeky or mischievous. At a time when systems often work against community participation in science and research, we want sessions that show boldness and risk-taking, perhaps even tiny acts of rebellion, in pursuit of outcomes big and small for researchers and the public.
If you’ve been using your platform to amplify unheard voices, or challenging the systems that get in the way of public discourse, we can’t wait to hear how you’re bringing the gallus spirit to your work.
Glasgow isn’t the place for the conventional. It is home to the radical and the sensational, and that is what we hope to bring to EUSEA27. You may have seen it during Scotland’s run at the 2026 World Cup, when traffic cones were strategically placed on statues, a reflection of Glaswegian playfulness and a rebellious streak. Since the 1980s, locals have been placing a cone on the statue of the Duke of Wellington in the heart of the city. No matter how often it was removed, a new one would appear, as if by magic, or by the combined mischief of the people of Glasgow. Now it is a permanent feature and a symbol of what Glasgow is all about, and it is the spirit we want to live up to at our 2027 EUSEA conference.
We invite contributions from practitioners who are challenging established ways of working, experimenting with new forms of engagement, and finding creative ways to achieve impact despite institutional, political or financial constraints.
EUSEA27 will take place on 18-20 May 2027 at the Advanced Research Centre (ARC), hosted by the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
The call is open until 9 December 2026, so get your teams together and submit your contribution. You’ll find more about the conference and how to contribute on our conference website:
EUSEA is delighted to partner with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the UK’s national funding agency, to offer bursaries to support attendance for UK-based professionals, researchers and community representatives working in engaged research. We’re very grateful for UKRI’s support in making EUSEA27 a home for the brave and bold of public engagement and science communication.
”“UKRI is delighted to be working with EUSEA and the University of Glasgow to bring the European Science Engagement gathering to the UK next May. To deliver UKRI’s new mission, to advance knowledge, improve lives and drive growth, we need to build stronger connections between the public and research and innovation. This conference will be a timely opportunity for the UK’s public engagement community to connect with European counterparts, share practice, and form new networks.”
Tom Saunders, UKRI’s Head of Public Engagement
