#EUSEA25 Day 1

The opening day of #EUSEA25 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was a vibrant celebration of innovation, collaboration, and creativity in science engagement. The day began with a warm welcome from EUSEA President Kenneth Skeldon and Ariadna Ortega Rodríguez of La Palma Research Centre, setting an inspiring tone for the conference.  Astrophysicist Nayra Rodríguez Eugenio delivered a compelling keynote on enhancing STEM engagement in the Canary Islands, highlighting strategies to navigate public apathy.

Throughout the day, attendees participated in diverse sessions:

  • Horizon Talks explored innovative approaches to science engagement, including youth training, farmer outreach, AI awareness, and gamification in cybersecurity.

  • Interactive workshops like “Where is Wilson?” and improvised theatre sessions provided creative methods to address societal challenges and enhance public engagement.

  • Discussions on topics such as citizen science in healthcare, inclusive communication, and the impact of digital community health coaching offered insights into fostering collaboration and improving health outcomes.

The day concluded with sessions addressing public trust, media influence, and inclusive engagement, emphasising the importance of ethical approaches to community-led research.

As the sun set over Gran Canaria, the day ended on a high note with a lively and joyful conference dinner. Laughter, music, and great conversation filled the evening as participants connected over delicious local food and shared stories from their work. It was a warm and celebratory close to a day full of inspiration, setting the perfect tone for the second day of #EUSEA25.
