Irish Photonics Integration Centre
The Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) is a SFI Centre for Photonics. The centre focuses on research; innovation and PhD training in photonics. Photonic integration technology is the focus of our research; spanning areas from photonics theory right through to device and system development and fabrication; enabled through our in-house laboratories and semiconductor fabrication facilities at Tyndall National Institute.IPIC has a diverse team of over 200 researchers located across Ireland’s leading universities and institutes of technology; working together to deliver training programmes; such as Sparkle and CDT-PIADS and contributing to key European projects such as MedPhab; PIXAPP and EUROPRACTICE. We work closely with over 30 industry partners to develop their next generation products; across Ireland’s high growth technology sectors such as ICT and MedTech; supporting their attraction to and growth in Ireland.Renowned physicist John Tyndall said “Knowledge once gained casts a light beyond its own immediate boundaries”. This has become the core of the IPIC education & public engagement programme. Photonics is ingrained in our everyday lives however the use of light in communications; technology; medicine and the environment has yet to be illuminated in the minds of the Irish public. IPIC strives to bring photonics to the forefront of Ireland’s economy by training highly skilled physicists and engineers and to support the next generation of scientists by showcasing the breadth and depth of career opportunities in STEM to students at all levels.
