Social Media Evaluation- Impressions vs Engagements…What’s the difference?
For many of us, social media has become our main outreach and engagement tool. It is hard to imagine a life without it now. With just a press of a button a message can be sent directly to your audience, whenever and wherever they are. Additionally, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the migration of most engagement activities to online platforms, social media has become an even more important source of dissemination and marketing data. But what is the difference between an impression and an engagement? Should we count all interactions or just comments and likes? And what is the best way to record and report this data?
Due to the fact that it is incredibly difficult to know how the inner workings of these social media algorithms work, and the subtle differences between the metric recorded by each platform, it is almost impossible for us on this side of the screen to interpret this data in a clear and concise way. But social media isn’t going anywhere (for better or for worse), so what are all going to do?
Well at our next Intersections bitesize discussion we will be giving you a peak behind the curtain with two social media evaluation experts! On August (TBC) we will be joined by Calum McAndrew from Scotland’s EXPLORATHON (innovative social media events) and Amy Hayward, (Digital Marketing Manager for the Cayman Islands Cabinet Office, who will share their insights and best practices on using social media metrics for evaluation, and they will try and address any of your questions or comments on the love/hate relationship we all have with social media.
