The history of the Lublin Science Festival goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. The first edition took place on October 4-7, 2001 and was initiated by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. Three years later, on May 21, 2004, the Rectors of five Lublin Universities together with the Director of the Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Director of the Institute of Rural Medicine signed a declaration at the headquarters of the Lublin Scientific Society, in which they established the Lublin Science Festival as a cyclical event popularizing science in society. Popularizing science through the presentation of interesting and diverse research projects in the form of lectures, workshops, demonstrations in laboratories and outdoors, exhibitions, performances, competitions or field games addressed to children, adolescents, adults, seniors and people with various types of disabilities makes the festival a unique opportunity to show the extremely interesting, inspiring and beautiful world of science to a wide audience.

The Lublin Science Festival is one of the top three largest science festivals in Poland. So far, sixteen editions of the Lublin Science Festival have taken place in Lublin, in which almost 13,650 research, educational and artistic projects have been submitted and presented. For ten years, on average, approx. 35,000 registered participants have participated in each edition of the event. To this number should be added people participating in both the Science Picnic (about 20,000 people) and events that do not require registration (about 5,000 people). The Lublin Science Festival has become a permanent fixture on the calendar of scientific and cultural events of Lublin. It combines the promotion of science with the social and economic development of the region, showing the relationship between science and everyday life. At the same time it creates new development opportunities within and for the economy of the region that can be identified with appropriate use of already available knowledge and innovation in particular fields of science and technology by various investment entities, while contributing to strengthening the intellectual and socio-economic potential of the whole Lublin Region.

The 17th edition of the Lublin Science Festival will take place next year from 17 to 24 September 2021 under the theme “Science without borders. Enjoy science!”.
